The Daily Dimmick living large on social media
Can you tell us about how you got started doing what you’re doing now? Was there an ah-ha moment that defined your path?
Stephen Dimmick: It was completely accidental. I was hairdressing and I hated hairdressing. In a conversation with my boss, Shirley, she asked “What would you do for the rest of your life without getting paid?” I instantly replied “makeup”. To which she responded “OK, now all we have to do is figure out how to make a million $$ from doing it.” That made perfect sense to me. From that day forward I never did hair in the salon again. I worked on brides til I met a photographer and inch by inch, mile by mile I made head way into my life of stardom. It was the best advice I’ve EVER been told in my life. Do what you love and then figure out how to make a million from it.
What do you love most about what you do?
SD: I love that I’ve learnt more about what real beauty is and it’s got nothing to do with bone structure.
What’s the proudest moment of your career? Is there a project that you think of as your absolute best?
SD: I can’t give you one. You’ll have to take a few and in no particular order: Seeing my work on the cover of Time magazine. My first Christian Dior couture show in Paris under the most incredible fashion designer of the late 20th century, John Galliano. Meeting and working for Mr. Valentino. The ultimate moment was begin there for his last collection Mr. Valentino’s final collection in Paris. That man is the chicest and most gracious man living. Working on my first Vogue Italia magazine shoot. Working on my tv show – it’s in pre-production now.
Who/What inspires you?
SD: People who shine through adversity and thrive.
Has social media changed how you do business? For the better or worse?
SD: Yes, Twitter in particular. I met my new TV career through Twitter. I met Oprah and lunched with her through Twitter. It’s a great venue to connect everyone around the globe!
What advice do you have for others struggling with social media?
SD: Be nice and kind. Encourage others. Don’t engage in mean girl BS. Steer clear of it and find others who want to encourage!
Can you tell us about what frustrates you about your career or the industry you’re in?
SD: There’s bs in every business. It’s part of the process to success. It’s how you deal with it. I take my annoyances to my friends and I don’t mean my friends in that business. Someone who can listen with very open ears who can clear the path to the answer. I’m fortunate enough to have friends who aren’t afraid to lovingly call me on my bs. If I can’t be clear on my bs there is never going to be growth in me or my life.
This is powerful. In my group I have something called a 3am friend. When my mind is racing and I need help, an ear, or someone to put me back on track that is who I call. I agree we all need those real people in our lives.
Tell us about the private Stephen– what do you love most about your home/life/family?
SD: I’m traveling all the time so when I get home I don’t want to do anything. I love sitting on the couch with my husband and our dogs with all the doors and windows open and catching up on my fave tv shows. Usually something on HGTV, Cooking channel or endless reruns of the Golden Girls. I’ve actually never been on a holiday.
Never been on a holiday. Boy do I have the right place for you to start looking for one when you do get time. GoGirlfriend is a great resource for vacation dreaming.
Tell us more about Stephen and what’s on tap for you in 2013.
SD: Continuing working with my editorial and advertising clients. Working on my TV show and there’s something big coming early next year that I’m not allowed to talk about just yet.
What’s the best advice you can give to someone following their own career path?
SD: The best advice I have for anyone following their own career path is to do what you love and know your worth when you doing it and be nice to everyone going up the ladder because one day they may be your boss.
Bonus question if you DARE (and I can’t wait for your answer) If you could choose any super power what would it be?
SD: Living my dreams warrants super powers null and void 🙂
Do you have a social media story to share? We’d love to hear it.
Refreshing to see a success story with a “do unto others” vibe at the core. A well-written, interesting piece, Dana.
Thanks Sue – I’m VERY grateful to be working with Dana – smart, funny and insightful. And she does GREAT interviews with interesting people!
